Leading by Example: A Key to Effective Leadership

By CMDCM Mark Schlosser, NAVSUP Headquarters

Leading by example is often considered one of the most effective leadership styles. This approach emphasizes that leaders should embody the principles, values, and behaviors they expect from their team members. The concept is rooted in the idea that employees are more likely to replicate behaviors and attitudes that they see demonstrated by their leaders.

Authenticity plays a crucial role in leading by example, as leaders who act with integrity and consistently demonstrate the desired values build trust and credibility within the Navy. Sailors are more likely to follow leaders who practice what they preach, seeing them as genuine and committed to the command mission.

By modeling behaviors such as a strong work ethic (sometimes you have to just roll up your sleeves), commitment to core values, and effective communication (as sender AND receiver), leaders foster mutual respect, motivating employees to perform at their best. When employees recognize that their efforts align with the Navy’s vision and are appreciated, they are inspired to adopt the high standards set by their leaders.

Here are some key leadership practices that exemplify leading by example:

  • Listen to the Team: Actively listen to team members at all levels. Leaders can learn from Sailors’ experience and foster collaboration.
  • Get Your Hands Dirty: Get involved in the work alongside your team. Lead by example, build trust, and gain firsthand insight into challenges.
  • Deliver on Promised Results: Focus on achieving tangible results, delegate tasks effectively, and follow up to ensure work meets standards.
  • Embrace Conflict: Address conflicts promptly and impartially to prevent disruption and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Value People: Appreciate individual contributions, communicate openly, and create a respectful workplace.

Leading by example is not just a management technique but a fundamental leadership philosophy that drives positive organizational outcomes. By demonstrating the behaviors and values they want to see in others, leaders can create an environment that promotes trust, respect, and motivation. Leading by example builds credibility, enhances employee performance, and strengthens the overall success of the organization.
